This fifth little book in the series of “The Adventures of Arnold A. Airplane” was inspired by a family who came to our church many years ago. The mother was recently divorced and had five children, no job, and no help. Our hearts immediately went out to this family. It was one of those times when God just brings someone into your life and a natural bond of love is formed. My wife and I and our two children loved this family from the time we met them and heard their story.
Sometimes we would give the mother a break by keeping the children for a weekend. We would also try to help a little with the guidance and discipline of the children and to be a “sounding board” for the mom when she needed someone just to listen. The eldest of the girls loved cheese, and at that time her mom just could not afford it, so we would bring her blocks of cheese from time to time. The things we did seemed very small to us at the time, but they led to a bond of love that will last all of our lives. They have also always been there for us whenever we needed prayer, love, support, or counsel. Even though we are all scattered throughout the country now, we still keep in touch because we truly are a family. Karen and I always feel loved and our hearts are warmed when the children refer to us as “Mom” and “Dad”.
Their mother, Gail, who was, and is a very strong, intelligent and talented lady, found a great job in a few months after they arrived in our home town. After quite a few years, she married a wonderful devoted man and is living “happily ever after.” She is loved and respected by our children and also referred to as “Momma Gail.”
My mother and father, in their latter years, didn’t have a lot, so Gail and her husband, Del, who then owned a dairy, provided my Mom and Dad steaks and other meats they could not afford (much better and more expensive than cheese).
Sometimes when we do the smallest acts of kindness, things that don’t seem big at the time, God uses that to create relationships that last forever.
I hope this little book touches the heart of its readers and helps to show our children how important it is to seize every opportunity to show kindness to others. Karen and I and our children are so thankful for the love of our extended family.
Luke 6:38 says:
Give, and it will be given to you. A good measure, pressed down, shaken together and running over, will be poured into your lap. For with the measure you use, it will be measured to you.”
